Finding Our Voice
Thanks to Jodi Belcher of Building Faith for this Great Idea – which is based on Cole Arthur Riley’s ‘Pentecost’ reflections in Black Liturgies.
I encourage folx to read and incorporate Cole Arthur Riley‘s Black Liturgies and other work consistently. Her creations are profound.
In Finding Our Voice: A Formation Idea for Pentecost, Jodi Belcher focuses on ‘A Spirit and People Who Won’t Be Silenced’, with a special focus on:
- The Spirit Gives People Voices
- The Spirit Seeks Disempowered, Subjugated People
- The Spirit Invites People to Resist Oppression
Supporting each segment with Riley’s eloquent reflections, Belcher moves on to offer three Formation Ideas:
- A Listening Prayer from Riley
- Storytelling – with specific resources and guidelines for making safe(r) space for vulnerability
- Speaking Truth to Power – which includes:
- Getting involved with a local organization or coalition working for social and ecological justice.
- Find vetted local/regional organizations with whom you might partner in The Web.
- Share stories, poems, and/or songs of resistance against oppression that affirm human dignity and creation’s sanctity
- Get creative with ‘prophetic art’: posters, murals, a zine, etc.
- Getting involved with a local organization or coalition working for social and ecological justice.
Belcher closes with affirmations of caution and joy and with encouragement to create and live into ‘a Pentecost space’.
