Earth Day – Warming Stripes

This Great Idea was shared by Katharine Hayhoe in her weekly post – but originates with climate scientist Ed Hawkins from the University of Reading.

AND YES: Earth Day has come and gone for this year – but this is appropriate for just about any time – and Earth Day should be every day!!!

See Katharine’s overview of how the sporting world got into the Climate Stripes action two years ago here.

Read Katharine’s 2025 introduction to Climate Stripes here.

In a nutshell: Ed Hawkins created a vertical stripes depiction of the progression of our heating planet. It is the image linked with this post.

The stripes have been incorporated into sports uniforms, car racing (of all the unlikely climate activists!!), and everyday fashion and accessories.

Katharine once again urges folx to don their climate stripes as a way to ‘Start a Climate Conversation’ and #SHOWYOURSTRIPES.

Have a Climate Stripes event:

  • invite seamstri to create Climate Stripes clothing (dress pattern available here; dress shirts here)
  • invite knitters to create Climates Stripes accessories (knitting pattern available here)
  • create a music event – inspired by this one – to generate community interest and conversation
  • invite the whole neighborhood to don their stripes – painted fingernails (what a fun fete option!), artwork, sidewalk chalk art, friendship bracelets, and/or makeup.

And share your stripes and conversations on social media (here’s a link to graphics)!

Hayhoe writes, ‘What do all of these things have in common? They open the door to a conversation about climate change. So #showyoursstripes and get the conversation going today!’

She’s got a strong theme going lately: It’s all about conversations with neighbors!!!!

This is what we do, church! WE CONVERSE!! Let’s get our Climate Stripes on and get to talking!!
