Move Out Donation Drives

Thanks to Katharine Hayhoe for this FANTASTIC Great Idea!

If it’s too late this year, tuck this one away and get started earlier next year: it’ll still be useful!

Katharine writes, ‘Are you a university or college student nearing the end of the school year, or do you know one? If so, think about how to sustainably move out of your dorm or campus apartment. The average student throws away from 640 points of items yearly, with a ‘significant spike’ coming at the end of the year… It’s estimated we consume 100 billion tons of raw materials every year, and all that extraction and consumption increases our heat-trapping gas emissions as well as contributes to land degradation and water shortages. What we do with our stuff matters!’

She goes on to highlight several campuses with robust year-end moving out donation opportunities. See her Talking Climate post for links to numerous examples and riffs on the theme. So many options!!

This would be a great excuse to contact and support your returning college/university students.

  • Ask how their year went.
  • Ask about their summer plans.
  • Let them know you’re excited they’ll be back in town for the summer (if that’s their plan).
  • Check to see if their campus is advertising a moving out donation program/drive.
  • Wonder about moving out plans.
  • Suggest participating in the drive planned for their campus or creating an opportunity, inspired by Hayhoe’s list of examples.
  • How else might your congregation support your students moving out and welcome them home?
