Get Out the Vote!

This Great Idea is inspired by Yalla Vote (a publication of the Arab American Institute) which sent out a call for poll workers on August 1, 2024 in observance of National Poll Worker Recruitment Day – a non-partisan national day of action to raise awareness about the vital role of poll workers.

Get involved!

Encourage congregation members – who are neighbors, work colleagues, and friends of others in your community – to become poll workers for the November 5, 2024 Presidential and General Election. Learn more about the role at HelpAmericaVote.gov.

Folx can sign up to serve in your jurisdiction by following the instructions found here.

But what about the separation of church and state?

Being a poll worker is an excellent way to participate in a non-partisan way in the civic and political life of your community.

This election season is promising to be one of the most contentious in living memory. Congregations can live into the Gospel call to loving our neighbors and enacting peace as they:

  • help diffuse Election Day angst by being a known, calm, welcoming presence at polling sites
  • prepare for potentially divisive conversations (see our Courageous Spaces Toolkit and/or Graceful Conversations video series)
  • encourage community members to register to vote; learn about voter registration drives here
  • encourage eligible high school students to vote – lots of resources can be found here
  • encourage your college/university students to participate in the Democracy Cup or share the Study Abroad Toolkit (as appropriate)

Congregations can be powerful centers of voter turn-out, voter support, and election angst peace-making. Let’s build up the Beloved Community!!
