REPAIRERS OF THE BREACH: SIGN & MULTIPLY SIGNATURES & 1000 VOICES FOR JUSTICE WEEKEND
FROM BISHOP WILLIAM J. BARBER, II, REV. DR. ALVIN O’NEAL JACKSON, REV. DR. HANNA R. BROOME:
Dear Beloved Faith Leaders, Clergy, and Justice Partners,
Grace and steadfast hope to each of you.
On Monday[May 5], five of our colleagues were arrested in the Capitol Rotunda while praying against an immoral budget that will be devastating if passed. Capitol Police charged them with “crowding, obstructing, and incommoding.” Though officers surrounded them and led them away, the group continued to pray and sing “This Little Light of Mine,” bearing peaceful witness in the people’s house.
Why This Matters—Voices from the Movement
Bishop William J. Barber II (Kettering Foundation): “Budgets are moral documents … and this one is destructive; it’s deadly and it’s disempowering.”
Rev. Dr. Hanna R. Broome: “Moral Mondays were born from a holy unrest—when budgets become weapons and policy becomes persecution, faith must walk into the halls of power and cry out for justice.”
Rev. Dr. Alvin O’Neal Jackson: “We will not be silent while children go hungry, the sick are denied care, and the poor are sacrificed on the altar of an unjust budget”.
Shane Claiborne (Religion News Service): “Stir the conscience of our nation. Let justice rise up on these very steps; let truth trouble the chambers of the Capitol.”
Our sacred traditions demand that we confront policies that wound the poor. When prophets are handcuffed for praying, our collective response must be louder, wider, and more resolute: We will not bow. We will not be bought. We will not back down.
